Estar estudando, correndo, sorrindo...
As construções formadas com o verbo 'estar' (verbo auxiliar) mais um verbo principal no gerúndio (estudando, cantando, comendo, lendo) são chamadas na Gramática da Língua Portuguesa de Locução Verbal (pelo menos é um dos tipos de locução verbal).
O uso que fazemos desta tal Locução Verbal (estar + gerúndio) - pelo menos aqui no Brasil - é assim:
Você consegue perceber estas diferenças? É muito importante percebê-las em português para poder saber traduzir estas sentenças para o inglês. Principalmente, para poder usar dois tempos verbais da língua inglesa: Present Continuous e Present Perfect Continuous.
Na sentença 1, como nos referimos a algo que está acontecendo 'agora' (now), 'neste momento' (at this moment), 'neste exato momento' (at this very moment), etc devemos usar o Present Continuous:
Conclusão, se em português as palavrinhas 'faz', 'há' e 'desde' são usadas com a locução verbal (estar + gerúndio), então em inglês o correto vai ser usar o Present Perfect Continuous. Veja mais alguns exemplos:

- Estou lendo este livro faz 4 horas.
- Ela está morando em Porto Velho neste momento.
- Ela está morando em Porto Velho faz 7 meses.
- Eles estão caminhando neste exato momento.
- Eles estão caminhando desde as 7 horas da manhã.
